The Bells Toll for the 'New York Times Best Seller List' ~ An OpEd Obituary ~

Long the darling of the publishing industry, the New York Times Best Seller list has become passe in this digital age of IndiePub authors, and, more importantly, their fans. Legendary giant, a promoter of 'Big Six' authors falls to the digital age.

Oct. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Born April 9, 1942 the New York Times 'Bestseller List'  (aka 'B. List') had a long and illustrious life - albeit not without controversy.

B. List is credited with bringing many world renowned authors to literary fame; it is true. But, B. List did not live the past sixty-nine years and six months without a few dust-ups. How B. List contrived itself was often under scrutiny and scorn; most particularly at the end of its long life. Many felt the sting of its snub as B. List discounted authors who joined the ranks of the self-publishing sect.

Many IndiePub authors who rose in fame on the Kindle Top 100 list warned that the New York Times Best Seller List was making itself passe with its exclusionary vision; thus sounding a warning that B. List was wont to heed.

Critics of the New York Times Best Seller List speculate that 'The Revolution' (The Publishing Revolution) killed the darling of New York publishing houses.  Others say it was run over while travelling too slowly on the digital highway.  The jury is still out on cause of death.

Survivors include some fifty authors.  These are the same fifty authors whose titles are seen in every single, solitary, big box book store around the world; e.g. Patterson, Evanovitch, Sparks, Koontz, Pratchett, S. Brown et al.  These cereal box authors were joined by mourners who have been published, in large part, because of their cocktail party connection with the publishing industry; most notably Miss Stockett.

Gate crashers could be heard outside New York's St. Patrick's Old Cathedral shouting, "Go, Indie!"
