Business And The One Man Band

Are you in business on your own? A one man band.

Oct. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Are you in business on your own? A one man band. Before I retired from my former employment I had long thought that it would be nice to have my own business, to work for myself and therefore reap the full benefits of my own labours rather than someone else taking the lions share.  Now, I am in business on my own and I realise that being a One Man Band is not as attractive as it first appeared. There are several drawbacks to the one man band, first of all you have to know so much more about the business, it is not enough to have expertise in just one small section of the business, you have to be like the proverbial Jack of All Trades. However, unlike the Jack of All Trades you cannot afford to be master of none. A further drawback for some is the who do you blame when things go wrong problem, if there is only you then the Buck Definitely  stops here. Of course the alternative and positive side to that is that when things go well you can take the credit for it yourself. I believe in all honesty though that the main problem with regard to being a one man band is time. No matter what the business, large or small there are multiple demands upon the owners time.  If you have ever watched a one man band in action you will have noticed that an extraordinary amount of frenetic energy has to be expended over a relatively short period of time to get everything working at once.  This kind of energy expenditure cannot be sustained over a long period of time and indeed does not always produce a particularly melodious sound.

So although I am in business myself and can therefore be considered to be a one man band I decided some time ago that one has to prioritise what one wants to achieve and take it from there. It is no good having a wonderful product for sale if no one knows about it or where to find it. one of the first priorities must therefore be I decided advertising the product , its availability, price and location. Of course if one has plenty of money to spare you can always pay someone else to do it for you, if however like me every penny counts then you have to do it yourself.

I never was a computer genius and that has not changed, I find it hard work learning new computer skills but there is hope, the old dog can learn new tricks, it just takes more time and hard work. So having mastered the basics in web site requirements we now boldly go where we have not ventured before. Updating the web site with available products. This is I find extremely time consuming, not only do the products have to be listed but they also need to be regularly checked to make sure they are still in stock and therefore available for sale.

So that is the first priority as far as I am concerned, next of course one needs to arrange for people to be able to pay for the goods they purchase, some would have this as the first priority but I believe I have it the right way round. No point in having a method for people to pay if you do not have anything for them to buy. In reality both the first and second priorities  need to be in place at the same time or within a very short space of time.

There are of course some areas where it makes sense to pay someone with expertise in a particular field to do the work for you. I am thinking here of Income Tax, unless you are well versed in Tax Law and Accountancy I would suggest it is far better to pay someone else who is. Although it may seem quite expensive initially a good accountancy firm can over time more than pay for themselves. It never ceases to amaze me what can be claimed for against tax, things I myself would never think of.

Last but certainly not the least, if in fact not the most important,is to provide the best possible service one can for the customer. If a customer receives good service and is happy with not only the purchased product but also the standard of service provided they are more than likely to recommend you to their friends. I believe word of mouth referrals are worth far more than standard advertising. To this end I would suggest that any problem or concern a customer has be addressed and resolved as speedily as possible. A happy customer is a potential return customer.

To conclude I would point out that time is perhaps the most important factor of all. Overnight success is not something that happens very often as far as I am aware. It takes time, effort, hard work and patience to establish a business. Do not expect to be making a profit overnight. Indeed many businesses run at a loss for quite a considerable amount of time before becoming a source of income and a viable concern. It can take a long time to recover ones initial outlay before even one penny of profit is seen but be patient hang in there. The time will come when the tide will turn.
