Molemate: Melanoma Cases Have More Than Doubled Over the Last 30 Years

Unprotected exposure to sunlight is the number one cause for the development of melanoma.

Oct. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- Melanoma is a form of cancer that begins in melanocytes. Melonocytes are cells that make the pigment, melanin. Melanoma most often begins in a skin mole, but it can also begin in other pigmented areas like the eye and the intestines.

While many types of cancers are on the decrease, melanoma is on the increase. The cases of melanoma have more than doubled over the last 30 years in the United States. There is a great deal of research that has been done and is continuing to be done that has made it possible for people who have melanoma to live a better quality life and has decreased the chance of dying from this disease.

The skin is the largest organ of the human body — and, yes, it IS an organ. It has functions other than just to look pretty and smooth. The skin protects the human body against heat, sunlight, injury, and infection. Moles sometimes develop on the skin. It is important to know, however, that every mole that develops on the skin is not cancer. Most moles are just simply that, moles. They are benign little growths that mean nothing. Some people even call them “beauty marks.”

Melanoma most often develops in people with fair skin. It can develop in darker-pigmented skin, but when it does, it usually develops under the fingernails, under the toenails, on the palms of the hands, or on the soles of the feet.
Unprotected exposure to sunlight is the number one cause for the development of melanoma.

Usually the first sign of melanoma is a change in the size, shape, color, or feel of an existing mole. Melanomas most often have a black or blue-black area. It is also possible for melanoma to appear as a new mole. The new mole will probably be black, odd, or “ugly looking.”

About SIMSYS-MoleMate

The FDA approved SIMSYS-MoleMate Skin Imaging System, a non-invasive skin cancer screening procedure, is a significant advance in the early detection of potentially life threatening moles and lesions.

Physicians have found the SIMSYS-MoleMate Siascope hand-held device easy to learn and use, and that it rapidly provides accurate images of the pigment, blood, and collagen below the mole or lesion.

Now, for the first time, physicians can more accurately evaluate suspicious moles and lesions in a non-invasive, pain-free way. Experts also believe it may reduce the need for time consuming and expensive biopsies.
