Oct. 12, 2011 - PRLog -- COLMEK DEVELOPS NEW MODEM FOR ORBCOMM’S WORLDWIDE GATEWAY EARTH STATIONS

Technology to improve reliability and efficiency of its satellite network

Salt Lake City, UT, October 12, 2011 – Colmek, a custom electronics engineering firm servicing the defense and commercial markets has announced today the successful design, development and delivery of a leading-edge satellite modem. Designed for ORBCOMM Inc. , a global satellite data communications company focused on two-way Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, the product will be installed at ORBCOMM’s Gateway Earth Stations (GESs) around the world. The new modem will support ORBCOMM’s next generation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that will begin launching later this year.

A long-time provider of sophisticated signal processing applications, Colmek has developed a powerful Linux-based satellite modem, which leverages the latest in DSP (Digital Signal Processing) and software-defined radio technology. Colmek’s flexible modem design will provide communications that are fully compatible with both ORBCOMM’s current and future generations of LEO satellites. The new modem’s streamlined design will enable increased data transmission speed, enhanced power efficiency and improved data reliability for the ORBCOMM network.

“Based on past performance on ORBCOMM application design projects, Colmek continues to be a key business partner for ORBCOMM in developing state-of-the-art components that support our current and next generation satellite constellations,” said John Stolte, ORBCOMM’s Executive Vice President of Technology and Operations. “We look forward to bringing the benefits of our future network expansion to our worldwide customer base, which will significantly improve our data transmission capabilities and performance and further establish ORBCOMM as the leading provider of M2M data communications solutions.”

“Colmek is excited for the opportunity to help ORBCOMM enhance its ground infrastructure with the development of a more robust and powerful GES modem,” said Jason Martin,Vice President of Engineering, for Colmek. “By leveraging our cutting-edge signal processing technology and our expertise in developing innovative, ruggedized engineering solutions for the government and commercial sectors, Colmek is poised to further expand our core competencies into the satellite communications marketplace.”
