By: Vintage Seekers Peter Layton’s ‘Skyline’ series was inspired by the sunsets seen through the south-facing windows of his former studio and a subsequent visit to Arizona, where the turquoise skies and rich sandstones had a lasting impact on the designer. This collection of nine pieces consists of glass spheres, vases and bottles of varying sizes. Tomorrow will see the release of ‘Red Paradiso’, a line of sculptural glass vessels streaked with brilliant, exotic colour evoking rippling sands and coral reefs. On Wednesday expect to see eight glass vessels from ‘Green Paradiso’, which shares the same painterly surfaces and vibrancy as its sister collection, but in a palette led by jade, aqua and rust reminiscent of inviting tropical waters. Finally, find the buttery caramel and cream tones of the ‘Chalcedony’ Each item is free blown using glass that has been heated to over 1200 degrees centigrade, a process that guarantees every piece is absolutely unique. Each item one of a kind, therefore, and are crafted in Peter Layton’s studio in Bermondsey, south London. The Austrian-born designer fled Nazi-occupied Prague with his family on one of the last trains to leave the city at the onset of World War Two. He grew up in Bradford where he befriended a young David Hockney, and went on to teach ceramics in America before discovering the techniques of hand-blown glass through Harvey Littleton and his studio circle in the 1960s. For more context around these beautiful, one-off glass designs, Peter Layton has given an exclusive interview to the Vintage Seekers magazine about his inspirations and background. Peter Layton’s work is representative of Vintage Seekers’ category of ‘Future Vintage’ design: coveted contemporary items that are set to become the iconic collectibles sought after by generations to come.
