How Steve Jobs Changed the World in the Area of Finding Love

Oct. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- One only need to look at personal computers to realize how Steve Jobs changed the world in the area of finding love.  He died on Wednesday, October 5, relatively young at 56, but he will be immortalized by a slew of stylish, personal digital products he left behind:  the sleek iMac, the Wi-Fi ready and clamshell-designed iBook, the industry-changing, wheel-spinning iPod; the revolutionary iPhone; and the über-sleek iPad.  They not only changed entire industries, but as any great innovations do, also reshaped people’s lives and their notions of how to find love regardless of distance.  

The question “how can I find love when I’m single after 40” using metallic and boxy devices known as computers sounded like science fiction back when it was first introduced as computing machines.  Now, of course, finding a soulmate through online dating is more a reality than a trend.

Computers were around long before Steven Paul Jobs, co-founder of Apple, redefined the computing world – digital and stylish did not go in one sentence when it referred to computers during his day.  Computers were contraptions that were in their element when crunching numbers, not when handling something as intimate as how to find love.  Finding a soulmate was something early programmers may not have expected computers to do.

Computers were ubiquitous in research laboratories and corporate offices, and they conveyed an industrial feel, quite appropriate in their environments.  It would take collaborative effort from other IT and computer industry giants and some major face-lifting from Apple itself, before it can become a personal tool for finding a soulmate.  “How do I find true love” using computing machines no longer sounded strange.

That all changed because of one apocalyptic moment that Jobs had experienced in a Palo Alto lab.  Personal computers in the 1970s were virtually unheard of in the consumer market because of their hefty price tag.  Jobs’ 1979 visit to Xerox’s research center in Palo Alto, California, was about to change computing – and the current notions of space and time – in a grand way, as grand as finding a soulmate in the online world.  His “Aha!” moment came when he realized he was looking at a device that could do more than just numbers, but also reshape the social and economic landscape of the future.  It was an iron-clad belief apparent in his job pitch to former Pepsi-Cola chief executive John Sculley:   “Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water, or do you want a chance to change the world?”

Apple II, which came out of Apple I that his high school friend and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak originally designed, was built on the promise that it could be a commercial and mass-marketed product with a personal appeal.  The new version introduced in April 1977 at the West Coast Computer Faire in San Francisco created a sensation.  Unlike its drab predecessors and its contemporaries, Apple II was sleek and low-slung, a device that was more at home in kitchens and dens than in corporate settings or metallic research laboratories.  The fact that it was priced within the modest budget of the majority of households made it an everyday, household item.  How to find love using computers have never been more commonplace, and people who are single after 40 who are looking for love are not as desperate now as they were then.  

Steve Jobs was right.  Computers have indeed become personal and changed the way people relate to one another in a very fundamental way, as fundamental as how to find love – something that would have been a lot harder to accomplish without the means and tools to span the gaps brought on by differences in time zones and geographical locations.
