By: Summus, Limited Smartphone Usage Leads to Less Computer Usage, New Summus Survey Finds NEW YORK, October 3, 2011 ─ In a new report published by Summus, Limited on smartphone usage, more than half of the survey respondents (55 percent) reported spending less time in front of a desktop or laptop computer since using a smartphone. Summus, a market research and information- Summus recently surveyed 267 current mobile phone users to better understand how and why early, middle and late adopters of smartphone technology use their devices differently. Key overall findings include: • Smartphones have become a primary go-to source for information, with more than half (XX percent) of all smartphone users relying on their device for information. • Smartphone have also become a useful tool to help pass the time while waiting (29 percent), stave off boredom (15 percent) and entertain (15 percent). • On average, nearly half (47 percent) of smartphone owners use their device in short intervals of 5 minutes or less, more than 10 times a day. • One out of every four smartphone users (24 percent) also use a tablet computer, with almost half (46 percent) of the late adopters (those who have been using a smartphone for less than a year) owning a tablet. “Our findings point to an emerging trend in personal computing in which people are using traditional computers less while using mobile devices more,” said Eva Schmatz, President of Summus. “We predict that in 10 years, desktop PCs will return to their role as specialized machines for the workplace, while the true personal computer will be handheld and indispensible.” The full report, From Apps to Maps: Smartphone Usage by Adoption Wave, is available for purchase on the Summus website at www.shop.summuslimited.com.
