The twenty-one European Destinations of Excellence in 'Tourism and Regeneration of Physical Sites'

Twenty-one tourist destinations from across Europe were awarded the title of ‘2011 European Destination of Excellence in Tourism and Regeneration of Physical Sites’ at a Gala Awards ceremony in Brussels on 27 September 2011.

Sept. 29, 2011 - PRLog -- EDEN is the acronym for 'European Destinations of Excellence', a European Commission initiative promoting sustainable tourism development models across the European Union. The project is based on national competitions that take place every year and result in the selection of a tourist “destination of excellence” for each participating country.

Malta’s destination of excellence this year is l-Għarb, a quiet village at the tip of the Maltese island of Gozo, where young people still speak in the local dialect and traditional dishes are served in the restaurants, keeping alive two fundamental Gozitan traditions. Wied il-Mielaħ, or "salty valley", a natural basin rich in flora and fauna which had fallen into disuse, has been successfully regenerated; the rubble walls surrounding the valley have been reconstructed and the natural vegetation reestablished. L-Għarb is also home to a folklore museum, many quaint, historically significant churches and the Ta’ Pinu Basilica.
