By: South Nassau Communities Hospital Hospitals were included on the list based on exhibiting excellence in orthopedics, quality of service, outstanding local and national reputations and high volume of orthopedic cases. The magazine’s editorial team publicly solicited recommendations for the list and every institution included underwent a substantial and lengthy review. Hospitals did not and could not pay for inclusion on the list and the magazine does not endorse any provider on it. Becker's Hospital Review is a bimonthly magazine published by ASC Communications located in Chicago, Ill. This is the fourth significant media honor that South Nassau has received this year. Previously, South Nassau was voted the Best Hospital on Long Island by readers of The Long Island Press, ranked thirty-third in the U.S. News & World Report's first-ever Best Hospitals metro area rankings and named to the Becker's Hospital Review 2011 list of the "100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare” in the United States. "We strive to be the ‘best place to receive healthcare,’ South Nassau provides the continuum of orthopedic care through its Center for Advanced Orthopedics, which includes the South Nassau Shoulder Center and Long Island Joint Replacement Institute™. The Center was established to meet the rapidly rising long-term need for full-service, specialized orthopedic care. Residents of all ages across Long Island can turn to them for patient-centered orthopedic treatments and a continuum of care that is vital to achieving maximum musculoskeletal health. Under the direction of Craig Levitz, MD, chair of the department of orthopedics and orthopedic surgery and a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, surgeons at the Center use minimally invasive and image-guided surgical technology to repair common and serious musculoskeletal injuries as well as to perform joint replacement surgery. The Center was one of the first of its kind in the northeast that committed to using arthroscopic technology and minor incisions to repair common, and sometimes even serious, knee or shoulder injuries. Knee and shoulder injuries repaired at the Center include torn cartilage and anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in the knee and instability, impingement, rotator cuff or labrum tears and recurrent dislocations in the shoulder. The Center’s physicians also specialize in adult reconstruction, foot and ankle injuries, pediatric orthopedics, hand and upper extremities, meniscus cartilage transplantation and Carticel™ Therapy to correct recurring knee cartilage injuries. Currently, the Center is participating in two national clinical trials on new treatments for the growth of cartilage and cartilage repair. The Center’s Long Island Joint Replacement Institute is one of just a handful of programs in the United States that combines image-guided medical technology with minimally invasive knee replacement instrumentation to simplify total knee replacement surgery and significantly improve the short- and long-term patient benefits of the operation, including less scarring and faster healing. Surgeons also specialize in custom-fitted total joint replacement as well as minimally invasive joint replacement surgery, including the Birmingham Hip™ resurfacing technique (a revolutionary alternative to total hip replacement) If non-surgical solutions are unable to manage back pain and rehabilitate the cause of it, the Center’s orthopedic spine surgeons use a range of patient-centered, minimally-invasive surgical approaches that provide short- and long-term relief from debilitating, painful back problems. These approaches include lumbar disc replacement (which is prescribed for patients with one diseased disc who have not improved after six months of non-invasive treatment), kyphoplasty (a procedure that corrects degenerative disc diseases such as vertebral compression fractures) and XLIF ( eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion procedure, which needs just two small incisions to correct degenerative disc problems such as recurrent disc herniation and degenerative scoliosis). To ensure that patients maximize the benefits of the specialized, advanced orthopedic treatments, South Nassau offers the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Therapy Center (SMART). Its physical therapy and rehabilitation programs combine a physiatrist’ # # # South Nassau Communities Hospital is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 435 beds, more than 900 physicians and 2,900 employees.
