By: Spirit of Math Schools Wong and his wife, Melissa Szeto, discovered Spirit of Math when they were searching for a high-quality education program for their son. Though he was too young for the classes, Wong and Szeto were so impressed; they decided to pursue a franchising opportunity. “We saw that Spirit of Math embodied the qualities that we want to instill in our own children,” said Wong. “Our belief in the program inspired us to reach out to more kids and teach them the life-long skills that this program imparts.” Spirit of Math has been taking kids from the top of the class to the top of the nation for over 25 years. Its revolutionary methods and unique curriculum, designed specifically for highly motivated students with a B+ or higher school average, puts the self-proclaimed “after-school school” alone in its niche among a plethora of programs targeted at helping students who are struggling in mathematics. Spirit of Math Schools has 27 locations across North America, and with Wong and Szeto on board, has now opened up its first southeast downtown Toronto location – Spirit of Math The Beach. “We want to establish ourselves as an integral part of the community,” said Szeto. “ We want to be recognized as a program of the highest standards that will take their bright and gifted kids to the next level. Spirit of Math is the challenge they need to reach their full potential.” Born and raised in Toronto, Wong and Szeto have a strong desire to see the children of Toronto exceed expectations in math. “We both had strong math upbringings and ended up studying and pursuing math-oriented careers – engineering and accounting – and we are thriving,” said Szeto. “Having strong math skills is the key to some of the best careers out there, but Canadian students are going to have to reach a whole new level to compete in today’s global market.” For parents of Spirit of Math kids, it’s about more than just math – students learn cooperative group-work and presentation skills; they learn to discuss and debate ideas and take ownership for their own work; and they get the opportunity to be challenged along-side students who are also working at an extremely high level to gain extraordinary critical thinking and problem solving skills. “The confidence acquired from the ability to solve complex problems carries over to all other aspects of life,” said Wong. “We can’t wait to share and spread the word of Spirit of Math throughout the community and become a pillar of established business in the area.” Spirit of Math Schools – The Beach opened for the 2011-12 school year on September 6 and will celebrate its Grand Opening on October 18 at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 415 Broadview Ave, Toronto. Classes are held on Tuesday evenings for grades two to seven. Applications for admission for the 2011-12 school year are now being accepted. http://www.spiritofmath.com/ # # # The highly acclaimed Spirit of Math is an after school system of schools and a fundamentally unique curriculum designed to meet the needs of high performing students.
