Mumbai, September, 2011: The 12th Five Year Plan commencing from April 1, 2012 would see a special focus on sports with various new initiatives under consideration according to Dr NarendraJadhav, member Planning Commission of India.

Speaking at the 2nd India International Sports Summit – 2011 (IISS) at Mumbai on Saturday, Dr Jadhav said that the Planning Commission is contemplating a mission on the lines of ‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan’ for sports which could be termed as ‘Sarva Krida Abhiyaan.’

“We are looking at developing sports culture in the country from village level to urban with development of sports infrastructure on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model,’’ he said. ``Events like IISS would give fillip to the complete sports arena in the country,’’ he added.

Among the new initiatives could be an Indian Institute of Sports (IIS) along the lines of the prestigious as IIM and IIT to provide holistic education including sports medicine, coaching and sports sciences.  

In his opening address at the IISS, Mr Udit Sheth, managing director and CEO of Transstadia Pvt Ltd said, “Sports culture has to be developed from very early age of a potential sportsman, ideally from early years of school. That is why we are focussing on developing sports in India from school levels and that too not only in urban areas but also rural areas. In Gujarat, we are working on the lines of Public Private Panchayat Partnership. This would be the first of its kind initiative in the country.”

Mr Desh Deepak Verma, IAS, Director General, Sports Authority of India (SAI) said, “Private partnership is invited in sports. It could be done efficiently with SAI wherein we can consider joining hands with private players. Land banks or existing available space at SAI facilities can be developed with private players on the basis of sharing space for stipulated durations of year.”

Other speakers and dignitaries present at the IIS were Wasim Akram (former Captain, Pakistan Cricket Team), Dhanraj Pillay, (Former Captain, Indian Hockey Team), Pullela Gopichand, (Distinguished Badminton Coach, Former All England winner) and Viren Rasquinha, (CEO Olympic Gold Quest, Former Captain, Indian Hockey Team).
