Cones used in petroleum drilling industry, combines with Cylinder&Centrum. Under great pressure, drilling fluids with cuttings flow into cones, after high rotation, heavier particles thrown to the inner wall, then slide down till separated out.

Hydrocyclone Cones is often used in petroleum drilling industry.

They are usually combined with Cylinder and Centrum.

Under great pressure, drilling fluids with solids cuttings will flow into cones, after high rotation, bigger and heavier particles will be thrown to the cone inner wall, then slide down till drop in apex and separated out.

So, there will be two kinds of rotary gas flow in the cone, one is liquid contains a great deal of big solids cuttings flow down as cyclone, the other is smaller drilling fluids mixed with gas go up as bow wave.

Hydrocyclone Cones Classification

By diameters, cones can be divided into desander cones, desilter cones, as well as micro cones.

We usually treat 6”~12” cones as desander cones which can separate 95% of the drilling cuttings over 75 microns out and 50% of drilling cuttings bigger than 30 microns.

The desilter hydrocyclone can separate out 95% of the drilling cuttings size over 40 microns and 50% drilling cuttings larger than 15 microns.

Micro cones’ diameter is 2”. When the input pressure is 0.2MPa, its capacity will be more than 5m3/h. The separation particle size is between 7~25 microns

Cones Operation and Adjustment

Nowadays, drilling fluids cones are mainly balanced cones.

If the cone drop in apex adjusted properly, when people input pure drilling fluid to it, the fluid will flow through totally from drop in apex.

While drilling fluids containing the cuttings flow through it, the cuttings will flow out of the drop in apex.

The solids will stick to the liquid cove. This is the balance point of the cone.

When solids cuttings is rather over permitted discharge capacity of cone solids separation, the drop in apex will discharged like a rope, there is no air flow in it, so it will be easy blocked.

Many solids cuttings will flow back to overflow pipe then mixing with the drilling fluids
