Sept. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- The Big Indie Wine Fest celebrates the wonderful local and independent wine merchants in the region. A massive festival hit, this popular event aims to make its mark as the biggest event of its type, in 2011.
The event will take place in the People’s Museum located on Left Bank, Spinningfields, Manchester, M3 3ER. Parking is available around the Peoples Museum and there are regular free buses from Piccadilly train station.
The Manchester Food and Drink Festival will be held from the 7th of October to the 17th. As, in the past the festival will be kick started by the Big Indie Wine Festival. Most of the independent wine merchants in the Greater Manchester Area will be there including Smithfield Wine, Manchester’s leading independent wine merchant.
There is also a whisky tasting at the prestigious Lowry Hotel where participants will be able to sample whiskies from over twenty exhibitors including a very special whiskey from Taiwan
The Manchester Food and Drink Festival takes the world of food and drink to all areas of Manchester, not just the city centre. Restaurants and bars are encouraged to feature events both within their own venues in and around Greater Manchester but also at locations in Albert Square. Before the Food and Drink Festival Manchester’s public will be invited to vote for their favourite chef, restaurant, bar etc., for a place in the annual Manchester Food and Drink Festival Awards. The Awards will be presented to the winners at the Annual Gala Dinner that marks the end of the festival. The headline chef this year is Hugh Fearnly Whittingstall who will be doing cookery demonstrations in his own inimitable style as well as signing copies of his new cookery book. Tickets for his main event are strictly limited so early booking is advised.
The venue for the Big Indie Wine Festival is itself a wonderful historic part of the history of Manchester. In May 1994 new museum galleries were opened in the Pump House on Bridge Street.  This is the only surviving Edwardian hydraulic pumping station in the city and it used to supply power to the warehouses and even wound the Town Hall clock and raised the curtain at the Opera House! The museum was known as both the National Museum of Labour History and the Pump House People’s History Museum.  In 2001 the museum decided to use one name to embrace the whole organisation: People’s History Museum.
The Big Indie consists of four sessions, Friday evening, Saturday early afternoon, Saturday late afternoon and Saturday evening. Tickets will cost £10.00 and visitors will be able to taste a large number of wines from around the globe. Master classes will be held at each of the sessions where visitors will be able to listen and learn about a number of wine regions and producers. Past years have seen The Gaucho explain about the Malbec wines of Argentina, Catalyst Wines run a vertical tasting of wines from the Mount Rosa Estate in New Zealand and Wino’s of Oldham discuss the boutique wineries of Australia.
Smithfield Wine will be offering tasting of 15 wines which will be on sale at the venue or available for home delivery after the event. These will include mead, ginger wine and a number of fruit wines as well as wines from far flung places such as Monsoon Valley wines from Thailand. They will also be showing some original wine and spirit gift ideas at the event that will inspire visitors with wine gifts for the festive season.
