To celebrate publishing the September Update of ‘All Smart Cookies Can Self-Publish’ Formatting A ‘Linked’ Table of Contents: Don’t you find it easier if there are links in a document that take you directly to a referred URL or directly to a chapter start from the Table of Contents? It’s not that hard to do! To format a linked Table of Contents for your eReader documents follow these instructions: Go through your document, and at each Chapter start or Indexed item, highlight the first word (one distinctive word) that represents that Chapter. Do a ‘copy’ function on that word. This word should not be ‘Chapter’. This can ONLY be ONE word for the ‘bookmark’ Go to your Insert function and click on Bookmark; A navigation Window will open; Make sure your sort selector is on ‘Location’; Do a ‘paste’ of the one word that will click to the chapter; then ‘copy’ that one word, placing it in the ‘Bookmark Name’ box; click ‘Add’. Repeat the process until you have a roster of One-Words that designate each Chapter. Type the words ‘Table of Contents’ at the appropriate location in your eBook and place your cursor under that location. Note: You’ll notice that in the ‘Bookmark’ Note: I recommend that you have a print-out of the sequence you want your Chapters and ‘Hyperlinks’ Go to your menu bar to your Insert options, and click on Hyperlink. In the dialogue box click on the left side “Place in this document” – you will be placing your hyperlinks in the same document you are working in, of course. Locate the ‘set’ of Bookmark One-Words that represent your Table of Contents, again, the set of words will be in ‘alpha’ order; whereas your bookmark list will be in ‘location’ Locate the one-word that represents your first chapter Click on that One Word Click on ‘OK’ Click ‘insert’ Click ‘enter’ Repeat the process until you have underlined, blue-links lined up under your Table of Contents. Test your links! There!
