Taylormade invented the burner plus iron for the amateur player that wants to gain distance whilst still maintaining control; in short they wanted to make an iron that hits long with forgiveness. The Taylor made Burner plus irons are available for a great price at the moment so we thought we would review them to see if they live up to Taylormade's claims.

These Taylormade Burner Plus irons are great. The hybrid 3 and 4 are very easy to hit and they are long. Both promote a fade that just seems to go. Easy to get up in the air. The stock grips are not very good, that would be my only complaint. It will take a little getting used to hitting irons with shafts as long as these but the distance you get is amazing.

When designing these irons Taylormade started from the ground up with the somewhat troublesome 4 iron. They changed the loft of the club, made the face larger and sole larger all in an attempt to make launching the ball easier. The combination of these three things makes hitting the ball a lot easier and generally more forgiving on all surfaces including the rough stuff and long grass. They then looked at each club individually to tune them for improved and more consistent distance regardless of which club you are using.

The big Burner Plus clubhead features a thin, fast and expansive clubface, significant perimeter weighting and an extremely low and deep-back CG that makes it easy to launch the ball high and long. Inverted Cone technology, visible on the back of the clubface, promotes faster ball speed and more distance on off-center hits. SuperFast technology (extremely light and slightly longer shaft, light grip) promotes faster swing speed for more distance.

Swing Speed - It's down to the shaft
A common problem that many players have is generating swing speed, the Burner plus has a lightened and longer shaft to improve swing speed and as a result distance. Some users have reported 10-15 yard gains from these clubs, our amateur golfer James did see some gains in distance and was impressed with how forgiving the clubs are. He said "It takes a while to get used to the weight of the club but that would be the same with any change (of club)".

Wider club face and sole make the Burner Plus higher and longer
On impact the wide club face powers through the turf and sends the ball on a high and long trajectory that will be best suited to 10+ handicappers. If you love to drive but don't see much distance from your irons then the Burner plus could be the clubs for you.

How do they look?
Another important factor of any golf club is how it looks, ideally you would like a club that performs well and looks good at rest. The Taylormade Burner plus does well in this area too, its not the best looking club in the world but the interesting and careful on the details on the rear of the club make it attractive enough to carry around in your bag - also its got burner written on the back which in our opinion makes you look and sound like you mean business on the golf course.
