Essex Cares was set up by Essex County Council in 2009, to provide services for people requiring care, support and assistance living in the community.

It runs a scheme called Social Enterprises Essex to enable adults living in the county with a learning disability to gain valuable work experience, skills and qualifications.

From catering to hospitality, horticulture to painting, to woodcraft and packaging, the possibilities are endless.

The idea is that those on the Essex Social Enterprises scheme gain skills and confidence in a professional business environment and enhance their job prospects.

All income generated by Social Enterprises in Essex is reinvested into the business.
There are many social enterprise schemes currently running throughout the county.

Allsorts is part of the Chelmsford social enterprises scheme and it includes training in sign making, canvas printing, IT, crafts and recycling, shredding and recycling services, canvas and photo prints and sign making.

Another social enterprises scheme in Chelmsford is the Greenacres Conference Centre. It offers horticultural and landscaping training as well as giving social enterprises Chelmsford clients the chance to learn all about catering, hospitality and administration.

Among the successful social enterprises in Colchester are the Book Rest Café, Treetops and the Red House. Training on offer includes customer service, till usage, waiting tables, taking orders, stock management, horticulture, catering, administration, animal care and crafts.

There is also a special Book Rest Café in Basildon. All Book Rest Cafes are based in local Essex libraries and give the public the ideal opportunity to sit down and enjoy a coffee and a chat. Other social enterprises Basildon include Barley Twist which provides training in catering, hospitality, conferencing and horticulture.
