BayRu: Russian women prefer books to cosmetics

Auto parts, musical instruments, or appliances? International e-commerce site BayRu analyzed the purchase history of 75,000 online shoppers (primarily Russian). Who is shopping online and what products are they buying from the USA?

Aug. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- Eighty-three percent of BayRu users are men. Max Andryukhin, President of BayRu LLC's Russia operations, explained: "Women are more likely than men to treat shopping as a leisure activity. Studies on the differences in behavior between men and women suggest that, for women, the process of browsing is very important. In contrast, men tend to view shopping as a chore that they want to complete as quickly as possible. For results-oriented shoppers, online retailers are ideal."

What do men and women buy over the Internet?

Ninety-six percent of car-parts orders are placed by men. Most purchasers of car parts live outside of Moscow and Saint Petersburg. This could be because some specialized auto parts (particularly parts of American-made cars) are not readily available in small towns and villages.

Ninety-five percent of musical-instruments orders are placed by men. Typically, BayRu customers buy rare, expensive instruments that they cannot find in their local bricks-and-mortar music stores.

The electronics category is also dominated by men; ninety-four percent of electronics orders are placed by men. Often, electronics are much cheaper in the USA than in Russia. BayRu shoppers find good deals on a wide variety of electronics goods - everything from cameras to 75-inch TVs.

Surprisingly, at BayRu, men make most purchases even in traditionally female-dominated sectors. For example, in the "Health & Beauty” category, the most popular product is Rogaine. Men dominate the fashion sector too, preferring to buy Ralph Lauren, Levi's and Nike.

The number one category for female shoppers is Health & Beauty; a quarter of purchases in this category are made by women. Health & Beauty is much more interesting to women than spare automotive parts, which is only 4% female.

Women’s second favorite shopping category is Books; 23% of books purchases are made by women. It is worth noting that Russian women shop this category more than Clothing, Shoes & Accessories (22%).

The statistics in this study were compiled from 75,000 registered users of BayRu over the first six months of 2011.
