WHAT: From Alaska to Florida and everywhere in between, landscape architects across the country will hold simultaneous events on August 17th to educate the public about their role in the environment around them. Atlanta area landscape architects will gather in Centennial Olympic Park to celebrate the work of landscape architects everywhere. Centennial Olympic Park was designed by EDAW, now known as Design + Planning at Aecom, and is the largest downtown park in the country developed in the last 25 years. The park has dramatically changed the character of the surrounding land uses over the 15 years and serves as a catalyst to draw leisure attractions along with hotels, offices and other businesses which have added more than $2B in development and established a strong western edge to the downtown. A great new livability trend are the new residential towers that are rising up in close proximity to Centennial Olympic Park. The park hosts more than 300 separate events per year which means that multiple events are running concurrently on any given day. WHO: Atlanta area landscape architects WHEN: Wednesday, August 17th, Noon until 1:00 p.m. WHERE: Centennial Olympic Park, Downtown Atlanta WHY: Landscape architects design not only iconic places like New York City’s Central Park and the FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C., but also downtown squares, local parks and even backyards. The simultaneous events are part of a larger campaign to help bring awareness to works of landscape architecture and the designers who create them.
