BACKGROUND:
On Sunday, August 28th 2011, the historic statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, one of the greatest religious leaders and civil libertarians the world has ever known will be unveiled on the National Mall in our Nations Capital. The ceremony however will be very limited in reflecting the wide and varied scope of his work. Dr. King devoted his entire life to freedom, justice and equality for the masses of people who had no voice and no one to speak for them. To that end he included many varied segments of the community in his demonstration and protests against injustice – clergy, churches, college students, labor, government and organizational leaders, community organizers and activists. He was first and foremost a Baptist preacher. It is therefore altogether fitting and proper that a clergy – led gathering of such a broad and diverse makeup participate in this once – in a lifetime celebration. All the various segments of the population who Dr. King marched and protested for, spoke for and ultimately gave his life for should be a part of this grand occasion.
