Vision-Strike-Wear salutes the SPARS Women in the Coast Guard

Women have played a vital role in the military throughout history. One such group was the SPARS, the United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve created on 23 November 1942 with the signing of Public Law 773 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Aug. 8, 2011 - PRLog -- The name is a derivative of the Coast Guard motto Semper Paratus and its English translation meaning, "Always Ready." The name also refers to a spar in nautical usage. Like the other women's reserves such as the Women's Army Corps and the WAVES, it was created to free men from stateside service in order to fight overseas. Its first director was Captain Dorothy C. Stratton and she is credited with creating the name for the organization. The cutter USCG Spar is named after the SPARS.

Beginning on February 17, 1943, the women of SPARS received training over a 5-week boot camp course, that included military etiquette and customs, naval uniforms and history, ships and aircraft, military organization and regulations. Initial training took place at a leased Palm Beach Biltmore Hotel (pictured below left) where more than 7,000 women were trained over the course of 18 months. After training, some chose active duty while others chose their specialized job based on aptitude tests and their educational backgrounds. They took on jobs in communications, personal management, as well as exercising their seafaring skills (swimming, yachting or sailing) suitable for Coast Guard Maritime work.

Today, more than ever, women in the military continue in their fervent service in all branches of the military - Coast Guard, Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine.
