Polaris was one of the first automatic pool cleaners widely available and revolutionized the market. It has a three wheel design and used an auxiliary pump to use water pressure to propel it through the water. Inside its throat there are two powerful thrust jets that use the water pressure to make a venturi to send leaves, dirt, and other debris right into its collection bag. Then all you have to do is empty its bag once a week.

Letro made parts for the aforementioned pool cleaner then one day made their own cleaner called the Legend. It also had three wheels and was highly successful. It was later changed to a four wheel design. It is very similar to the Polaris unit but there are minor changes made but they have more beefy components than the latter.

Both of these are great units that utilize booster pumps for propulsion and to create venturis for suction. Sometimes the pool shape dictates which is better suited for one pool or another but units are about dead even as far as performance.

Next, we have suction cleaners. They hook up to your pools skimmer or a dedicated suction line. Then inside there will be a paddle wheel or a diaphragm that will make the body pulsate, to help move the unit, and stir up dust along the bottom of the pool.

Finally, there are robotic cleaners. Robotic cleaners are electric powered. These are great for pools that don't currently have a cleaner and the customer doesn't want to lose the use of their skimmer basket. There is a power center that plugs into a 110 volt receptacle. These simply drop into the pool and it has a power cord.  Flip the switch on the power unit and that's it. Some units have a learn mode and will study the bottom of your pool to shut off automatically.
