Restaurant salad bars may seem harmless enough, but where weight loss is concerned it’s more like sabotage. Their concern is not with keeping you slim and healthy, but to keep you addicted to their wonderful food selection.

They’ll explain to their luncheon companions that they are on a diet or are trying to lose weight, so they’ll just have the salad bar. This is a good idea as long as the choices within the salad bar are the low calorie ones, and not the extensive high fat and high calorie dishes available at today’s colourful and huge salad bars.

Having the entire salad bar to choose from and in unlimited quantities can sabotage your weight loss regimen. With all of the beautiful veggies from which to choose, you can pile up a huge plate of them and feel rather satisfied that it looks like a very healthy plate of food, low in calories and high in vitamin content. It’s all good until you get to the extras section. Those bacon bits look great. Just a few fried croutons could add just the right amount of crunch. The fabulous chunky bleu cheese dressing should top it off.

The veggies are great. When you add the extra goodies, though, you’re asking for trouble. Some of the restaurant quality dressings are extraordinarily high in sodium, fat, and calories. That’s why they taste so good. On that plate of seemingly healthy salad fixings you could be preparing to eat more in fat and caloric content than if you had simply ordered the baked fish or a sandwich wrap. The point is, at the salad bar everything is at your fingertips and every topping you could imagine is readily available. That makes it harder to resist.

Some salad bars these days have evolved into an almost unlimited buffet of all types of foods. There are pasta dishes complete with the cheeses and sauces to go with them. You’ll find deserts of all types, including soft serve ice creams and various toppings. The salads might include delicious seafood salad made with real mayonnaise and seafood cream sauces that you can’t resist, but are deadly to your weight loss program.

In addition, most of what you will find at a modern salad bar is designed to make you want to come back for more. They want you to leave satisfied and quite full. Therefore, in true restaurant style, they add whatever sugars, fats, salts, and msg to their dishes that they need to for the utmost in taste experience.
