Recently released market study: Brazil Consumer Electronics Report Q3 2011

New Consumer Goods market report from Business Monitor International: "Brazil Consumer Electronics Report Q3 2011"

July 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Brazil's domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and video, audio and gaming products, is estimated at US$29.2bn in 2011. Consumer electronics retailers reported a stronger-than-expected demand rebound in 2010, which left some vendors struggling to catch up. Sales of flat screen TV sets surged while high double-digit y-o-y growth was recorded in handset shipments.

The positive results from 2010 are expected to continue in 2011 despite recently introduced credit-cooling measures. Demand for consumer electronics is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.6% to US$37.5bn by 2015, driven by growing popularity of digital lifestyle products such as LCD and LED TV sets and smartphones. Government PC procurement and subsidised handset programmes will also help to support growth.

Computer

Computer hardware accounted for about 39% of Brazilian consumer electronics spending in 2010. BMI forecasts Brazil's computer hardware sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$11.5.bn in 2011. PC penetration, estimated at 29% in 2010, could climb to 41% by 2015. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2011-2015 period is forecast at about 11.4%, driven by sales of notebooks and netbooks.

AV Devices

AV devices accounted for about 34% of Brazil's consumer electronics spending in 2010. Brazil's domestic AV device market is projected at about US$10.0bn in 2011. Digital TV set sales will be the main driver of a projected 2011-2015 CAGR of 6.9%, with other growth drivers including digital cameras and portable media devices. In 2010, sales of flat-screen TV sets received a strong boost from the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, which left some vendors struggling to keep up.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted for about 27% of Brazilian consumer electronics spending in 2010. Brazil's market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% to US$9.9bn in 2015, with mobile subscriber penetration reaching more than 140% by 2015. Penetration is still considerably lower than in many other emerging markets, though more rural markets will see mobile services arrive over the next five years. Affordable smartphones are a key focus for operators and are expected to account for up to 20% of handset sales in 2011. 208349  191275 Per capita food consumption in Central America is expected to continue its steady expansion in the coming years, albeit from a low base. Any upticks in export activities should also have a positive impact on the region's economies, translating into an improved consumer purchasing power, although much will depend on the economic performance of the US, Central America's key trading partner. In the meantime, large income inequalities will remain one of the main hindrances to such development. Nevertheless, urban locations offer opportunities for value-added sales of products such as convenience foods, given their busy lifestyles.

Key Company Trends

Costa Rican Coffee Production Recovers from Heavy Rains - Coffee harvest in Costa Rica is likely to increase by about 5.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) in the 2010/2011 season, according to the director of the country's national coffee institute (Icafe), Ronald Peters. Damages from the heavy rains experienced in 2010 appear to have had a less serious impact on the crop than anticipated. Despite such issues, we expect the coffee crop to grow in the coming seasons, driven by plantation renovations.

Walmex Continues to Expand in Central America - The retailer plans to spend US$378mn on the creation of 80 stores across Central America in 2011. The expansion, which will increase the firm's retailing footprint in Central America by 11.9%, underlines the significant opportunity for growth in this promising region, where we expect mass grocery retail sales to advance rapidly over the next five years. This highlights the growing opportunities in a region where political and economic volatility had previously been a barrier to growth. However, Walmex's dominance within the region is likely to stifle competition across the mass grocery retail (MGR) industry.

Key Risks to Outlook

Election Uncertaintly - This potential for unrest across Central America has been heightened by the approaching elections in a number of regional markets, not just in the immediate region but also across Latin America. In most cases, electoral uncertainty, both in terms of election result and subsequent policy trajectory, has impacted the 'willingness-to-pay' category of our sovereign risk ratings, although some economies have also had sizeable downgrades to their 'ability to pay' scores.About Business Monitor International
