The primary biological function of glutathione is to act as a non-enzymatic reducing agent to help keep cysteine-thiol side chains in a reduced state on the surface of proteins. Reduced glutathione is involved in the synthesis and repair of DNA. It helps to recycle vitamins C and E, as well as block free radical damage to enhance the antioxidant activity of vitamin C. Also, it is the base material for several other key antioxidant enzyme systems, including glutathione- Glutathione cannot be obtained directly from food constituents, but these levels are enhanced through the intake of vitamin C. A daily dose of 500 mg vitamin C may be adequate to elevate and maintain reduced glutathione concentrations in the blood. In contract, direct consumption of glutathione orally does not seem to be an effective means of enhancing liver and intracellular glutathione levels. A small study conducted by Witschi et al, using several human subjects concluded that “because of hydrolysis of glutathione in the liver where it detoxifies many harmful compounds to be excreted thru the file. Some glutathione can also be found in red and white blood cells, the lungs, and the intestinal tract. Intestinal and hepatic gamma-glutamyitransferase, dietary glutathione is not a major determinant of circulating glutathione” Through glutathione is undoubtedly a potent antioxidant, indications for its use as a supplement are not yet well established. There is preliminary evidence that might eventually prove to be useful in the management of some cancers, atherosclerosis, diabetes, lung disorders, noise-induced hearing loss, male infertility, and prevent or ameliorate various toxicities. It has been an orphan drug for the treatment of AIDS-associated cachexia, and may also have some antiviral activity. Glutathione is available as a single ingredient dietary supplement, or in combination products. Daily dosage ranges from 50 to 600 milligrams. Capsules are usually found in 50 or 250 mg sizes. Women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid the use of supplementary glutathione. # # # Best Nutrition Products, Inc.Hayward, California, USA and Biotechayur, Odisha, India manufacture a large number of vitamins, minerals, Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal and nutritional supplements and raw materials of standardized herbal extracts.
