What Causes RTVScan.exe Errors?

You will typically experience errors with the rtvscan.exe when you are running an outdated DirectX version (normally older than DirectX 8.1) in your system, which makes your PC use too much RAM and memory, which is what leads to this particular error. How To Fix RTVScan.exe Errors

Step 1 – Update The DirectX Version On Your PC

The first thing that you need to do when you have this error in your computer is to update the DirectX version in your system.  To do this, first click on Start then choose All Programs,. Next, select Windows Update. Afterwards choose Custom updates and then view any entries in the “Optional Software” field.   When you see the DirectX updates appear on your screen, install them.

Step 2 – Rename The “SoftwareDistribution” Folder Of Your PC
Another way to resolve this error in your PC is to rename the SoftwareDistribution folder in your system. The steps for doing this are explained below.

Log-on to your PC as an administrator
Click on Start then choose All Programs
Next select Accessories
Right click Command Prompt then choose “Run as administrator”
Type “net stop WuAuServ” in the “Administrator: Command Prompt” window then press Enter
Again click on the Start button then type “%windir%” in the Start Search box. Next, press Enter
Locate the “SoftwareDistribution” folder in the opened folder
Right click on the folder, then choose Rename
Rename the folder by typing “SDold”
Restart the Windows Updates service in your PC by typing “net start WuAuServ” in the opened window.

Step 3 – Re-Install Programs Causing The Error
One other likely reason as to why this error will surface on your PC is due to Windows’ failure to process some of the files and settings in a problematic program.  For this matter, you need to remove the “guilty” application or applications from your computer to restore normalcy inside your system.  To accomplish this, follow the steps that are outlined below:

First click on Start afterwards choose Control Panel
Next select Add/Remove Programs
From a list that will be displayed on your screen, locate the “guilty” application then click on the Uninstall tab
If an uninstall wizard pop-ups on your screen, follow the steps that it will display.
You can now restart your PC to refresh the settings in your system
Reinstall the program on your computer by inserting the CD installer on your CD/DVD drive
Finally, test the application and see if it is working properly

Step 4 – Clean Out The Registry
