| Seattle Biz Coach: Time to Honor the Principles in Declaration of IndependenceSeattle Biz Coach Terry Corbell says support has badly eroded for the tenets of the document that declared the nation’s independence on July 4, 1776 in the American Revolution.
By: Terry Corbell “Because of politics, more and more Americans are losing their political and economic liberties that we increasingly superficially celebrate on the fourth of July,” contends Mr. Corbell on his portal, http://www.bizcoachinfo.com in his column entitled, “Do We Really Honor the Declaration of Independence?” “Thomas Jefferson was inspired to write the Declaration of Independence as a list of grievances against the King of England – a list of timeless principles,” He writes the meaning of this phrase, “the shot heard round the world," was inspired by the American Revolution. “Allegedly, the document is still cherished as a declaration of freedom from tyranny,” he asserts. “But are we truly independent? He says crises are looming this Independence Day, such as the trade deficit, credit and housing bubbles, high unemployment and an enormous national debt. “At the very least, they threaten to financially imprison our children and grandchildren for decades,” Mr. Corbell warns. “Worse, they threaten this nation’s future.” He believes much of the fiscal chaos is prompted by dysfunctional public policies of the government and “ruling class” – many public servants at the local, state and federal levels who have government pensions and benefits that are higher than those accorded in the private sector. “We keep electing people who enact policies detrimental to the nation,” Mr. Corbell adds. He quotes a noted economist, Dr. Peter Morici, a professor at the University of Maryland, and the former chief economist at the U.S. International Trade Commission in the Clinton Administration. “…since 2007, government spending has jumped $1.1 trillion but only $200 billion was needed to cover inflation – the $900 billion additional was new programs and benefits and higher pay,” said Dr. Morici. “That has increased federal spending’s share of GDP from 19.6 percent to more than 25 percent.” Mr. Corbell also cites the attitudes of the nation’s public officials: the high $39 million payroll at the White House, the lack of statesman-like budget and debt-ceiling talks in Congress, and the Democrats refusing to consider the GOP’s recommendations of $2.5 trillion in pork cuts over the next decade. “Ironically, the Republicans were responsible for countless earmark and pork legislation during the Bush Administration,” His full analysis: http://www.bizcoachinfo.com/ # # # Seattle Biz Coach Terry Corbell is a longtime columnist.
