July 1, 2011 - PRLog -- In the space of just a few years, Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs) have transitioned from their fledgling state as a technology deployed only by early adopters and gadget enthusiasts to their current position as a mainstream informatics platform. Current estimates suggest that more than a quarter of laboratories have already implemented – or are in the process of deploying – an ELN. And because such plans must address the varied needs of scientists, sponsors and other stakeholders, groups using ELNs need to have a clear method of defining and measuring success.

Writing for Scientific Computing in June 2011, certified project management professional Dr Bennett Lass outlined exactly what makes an ELN implementation successful, though he stressed the point that answers to such a question will vary depending on who is asked and exactly how they define 'success'. He explained that, in terms of technical demands, scientists and technical managers basically want to do their jobs faster and with minimal disruption.
