June 29, 2011 - PRLog -- Cambridge, ON- - Last month, unemployment numbers dropped from 7.6% to 7.4%.  But, here in Ontario, it remains at 7.9%.  And, some areas are facing a rate of 11%.  While some may feel as though the recession is over, these numbers are still disappointing and indicate the economy… and, especially, finding a job, will remain a concern for some time.  As reported by Ryan Sweet, economist with Moody’s Analytics, “May's job data are only the latest in a series of disappointments that could rattle business confidence.”

With unemployment statistics at this rate, joblessness is not a choice; it’s an economic consequence.  Company lay-offs, combined with job unavailability, have caused unemployment to remain at an undesirable level.  As a result, individuals have had to look within for the answers to their problems.  Many of them have either started, or are considering starting their own business.  Because they need to do this without spending a lot of money, or taking a lot of risk, most of the businesses people are starting are home-based.

According to Steve Anszur, executive director of the Small Business Development Center, “You have a frustration level where you’re unable to find a job in a reasonable period of time, so people get creative and think, ‘What have I done in my career that I can do personally as a business owner?”

Although this may still seem risky, for the once-unemployed, it’s liberating to be able to work again.  While entrepreneurship comes with its special set of questions and concerns, many people feel the benefits far outweigh them.  Being your own boss guarantees never being fired or laid off.
