Follow on Google News | Can you really do your own Pest Control? Is it wise to perform your own pest control, what hazards are involved and what risk are associated?
By: Keith Birkemeyer 1.Termite work – not so much because of the critter itself but largely due to the tools involved and the ability to get the material to the right place. This work requires you to dig trenches and use fairly good size drill to drill holes into concrete and then put chemical pesticides into those holes. 2.Africanized Bees – the biggest reason on this one is SAFETY. Once you start this process it is impossible to call backcies, once the colony feels threatened and they start to sting everything in sight, it is impossible to calm them down and only time will do that. Dogs, people and anything out and about will be attacked and stung. A 200 pound person can take about a thousand stings unless you are allergic and then it only takes one. I believe it is far wiser to just call in a Professional – I always start out by putting my bee suit on. NO matter what I want to be prepared for aggressive bees whether they are or not, but at least I’m ready for anything! 3.Bed Bugs – This is a very hot topic now, bed bugs are extremely small and their eggs are translucent. They are capable of hiding because they can flatten their bodies out and they are very good at hiding, often in a place that you might not think of. It is very important to understand the pest and know their habits, if you understand them you might be able to put a better handle on the problem. Because of their size I think this should be an immediate call to a Pest Management Professional. Don’t use a bug bomb as this may make the pest go deeper into their hiding area, don’t use Diatomaceous Earth (DE) like you are building a moat around your bed – all of these things make it more difficult when the Professional does show up. Yes you probably can do your own pest control but let’s look at some factors and this first one is the one I hear the most. My husband/wife/ •They will have you on a schedule. •They know bugs – their habits, biology, harborage areas etc. •They also know what works, they probably change out pesticides throughout the year and they use specific products for specific bugs. So my suggestion, do what you do best and let the Pest Management Professional do what they know best.
