June 22, 2011 - PRLog -- Hydroponics is an innovative and a cutting-edge technique to grow stable and high yields within very limited space. As hydroponics is evolving most hydroponic growers are now following the mantra: Less is more and bigger is better!

The growers have discovered that larger plants even in small numbers can give higher yields compared to a sea of small plants. As you are aware, bigger roots translate to bigger yields, however in most hydroponic gardens there is hardly any room for roots because of use of smaller containers, rockwool slabs, aeroponics and raised beds.

The solution to this problem is putting plants in larger containers - as large a 10-20 gallon buckets or even more. This allows root development that can support truly massive plants indoors. This will result in immense, multi-branched, heavy-yielding indoor "trees".

Other than providing room for larger root mass, early trimming of plants to produce a round, dense structure can help growth of large plants. In case of equatorial plants which tend to go vertical, careful trimming of the topmost growth tips of key branches early on is the answer. This way even equatorial strain can become multi-branched so as to get a hydroponic plant that spreads horizontally.

Horizontal spreading has an advantage in terms of provision of extra light per plant. In this case, buying new hydroponics lighting units although advisable is not a necessity. Extra light can be arranged by optimizing plant placement, light placement, reflectors and reflective material. It is important to have even, strong, uniform lighting from side to side and top to bottom.

Use of greenhouses or customized rooms, a well-drained soil mix, or a home-built water culture or flood and drain system with huge reservoir or bucket space and combination of HID, plasma and T-5 fluorescent lighting is found to be most effective to promote large plant growth.

Little tricks are used by experts for hydroponics plants such as adding beneficial microbes and Roots Excelurator to the root zone, along with a carbohydrate formula to feed the microbes. In case of large plants, each flowering stem is like a sturdy main stem. This makes harvest easier. However, growing large plant is not meant to be practiced by everyone as it requires larger space and a feel for artistry of pruning.
