Gipsy Moth IV sailing Round the Island

The historic yacht Gipsy Moth IV will be sailing in the JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island race this year, with youngsters from Cowes based maritime charity UKSA onboard as part of the crew.

June 10, 2011 - PRLog -- Gipsy Moth is a key part of the country’s maritime history after Sir Francis Chichester sailed her singlehanded around the world in 1966-7. Her new owners Rob Thompson and Eileen Skinner are working closely with UKSA to ensure that the boat gives young people the opportunity to change their lives through maritime education and personal development.

The young members of the crew have previously been involved in UKSA projects such as the Partnership for Youth Engagement. This works to increase the skill sets and self-esteem of young people whilst helping them build positive relationships with their school and local services.

When asked for their feedback on the project, one young person involved now ‘has the confidence to take part in a school production’ and many of them ‘feel like I can talk to adults now’.

In order to contribute to the running costs and provide sailing experiences to many more young people, there are opportunities to either sponsor the place of one of the young people for the race, or to pay to come onboard as part of the crew for this famous race and sailing an iconic boat along with some inspirational young people.
