June 8, 2011 - PRLog -- Urban mobility is currently undergoing a paradigm shift. As populations explode in urban areas and megacities are birthed, conventional models of transportation are presenting themselves as both obsolete and inadequate.

New vehicles, new business models that offer alternative mobility solutions, trends that encompass greater interconnectivity and integrated mobility will transform the way people travel. Concepts like bike and car sharing, integrated door-to-door transport solutions, intermodality, smart phone-based urban mobility solutions and automotive application stores will become commonplace.

So, how will the future of urban mobility spool out? Will it revolve around sustainable personal transport (for instance, cars), or around sophisticated multi-modal forms of public transport? What will be the effect of urbanisation and future megacities on vehicle technology planning?

Offering a 360 degree view of mobility solutions with the active participation of government, public sector and corporations is Frost & Sullivan's interactive workshop entitled 'Urban Mobility 3.0: Growth Opportunities in Smart Mobility Business Models, Infrastructure and eService Platforms'. This, the third in a series of annual workshops, will be held in London on 15th and 16th June.
“There has been a seismic shift in terms of the changing emphasis from vehicle ownership to vehicle usage,” says Frost & Sullivan Partner Sarwant Singh. “The vision of modern urban mobility is one that encompasses new modes of transport including BRT, electric vehicles and high speed rail to innovative business models like vehicle sharing and carpooling.”

“A successful translation of the modern urban mobility vision will, however, require the right set of ingredients,” continues Singh. “It will need the right political vision and support, integrated city planning, appropriate integration, the right timing for implementation, all backed by effective marketing and communication.”

Keynote presentations and panel discussions at the workshop will be supported by senior representatives from the government (Greater London Authority), industry corporations (Eaton Corporation, BMW, Car2Go – a Daimler subsidiary, E.ON AG, General Motors, OLEV, Sixt AG, Streetcar, TSB and Verbund Austria), the public sector (UN-Habitat) and the academic world (University of Amsterdam).

“Change is already underway,” says Frost & Sullivan Partner and Automotive & Transportation Practice Director, Mr. Sarwant Singh. “Today, new players are entering the market and providing integrated mobility solutions. Tomorrow, transport operators (rail and bus operators), mobile phone operators, IT services providers and online booking agencies will offer door-to-door, multi-modal solutions. These Mobility Integrators (MI) will take transportation solutions to the next generation by fully integrating the existing long- and short-distance transportation providers to create a single solution."
