Mercedes Service Can Be Less Expensive Than You Think!

June 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Everything today is becoming more and more expensive, not just automobiles and the required maintenance.  It all comes down to where to service the vehicle - with a franchise dealer or with a local independent specialist.   This decision will depend largely upon the age of the vehicle.  Typically, newer automobiles are serviced at the franchise dealership where the vehicle was purchased, as dealers include this service under the vehicle's warranty program.  Vehicles 4 years or older are no longer covered under the factory warranty.  For obvious reasons it seems logical to service the vehicle where it was purchased.  However, this is not always the best choice.

Franchise dealerships know their particular market and product very well.  In the case of Mercedes service they are made aware of any recalls and are provided frequent service bulletins from the factory.  They have a direct link to the factory for parts.   Vehicle repairs are completed timely, as dealerships typically employ a large technical staff. The service technicians are highly trained and are required to keep abreast of the latest technology.  The dealerships are modern and plush.  Each franchisee is required to maintain a similar standard of operation and appearance.  Waiting rooms are comfortable and offer such amenities as beverages, snacks and videos on the latest LED flat screens.  Vehicles are hand washed at some facilities.  However, the labor costs are very high, where individual jobs are priced based upon predefined hours and not on actual time spent repairing vehicle.  Parts, although original equipment is only offered at retail.  The higher costs are directly proportionate to the large overhead carried by these dealerships.  It is a business!

A local independent specialist can offer a lower cost option for your pre-owned Mercedes vehicle. However, the one caveat is whether this specialist is well qualified in Mercedes service.  Consult with other Mercedes owners or check with the local Better Business Bureau.  Ask or look for credentials before entering into a business relationship with an "unknown" facility.  Most factory trained Mercedes technicians are proud to display the factory provided training placards.   The well trained local specialist can provide the same level of service as the dealership, especially if their prior experience was at a Mercedes dealership.  Labor rates are typically lower, as the local specialist does not carry the same overhead.  Parts, which make up a good portion of the repair bill, are often lower, since the specialist is not required to purchase directly from the factory.  There are a number of wholesale parts sources in which the savings can be passed on to the consumer.   Several of these sources provide the exact same product sold at a dealership, just not with the Mercedes branding.  Air, oil and fuel filters are a good example.   A one on one relationship is also more easier to foster with an independent specialist than with a dealership.  Trust is an important factor!
