Austin’s Bike Month Goes Out With A Splash

Local Bike Nonprofits, Bike Shops and the City of Austin Come Together to Celebrate Bike Month 2011

June 2, 2011 - PRLog -- AUSTIN, TX – Cyclists of all stripes will converge on Martin Park from 3-6 pm on the afternoon of Sunday, June 5, 2011, for the 2nd Annual Bike Month Closing Celebration.  The fruit of a collaboration between local bike groups and clubs, bike shops, and the City of Austin, the event will celebrate another year’s successful Bike Month.  Local vendors, bike shops, frame builders, non-profits, social clubs, and other bike-related businesses will be on hand to partake in the festivities with free refreshments, music and games.

Every type of cyclist is welcome, and there will be a little something for everyone, including BikeTexas’ Kids Kup children’s bike race, trick contests for fixed gear and BMX bikes, games, prizes and commemorative t-shirts.

Bike Month is a nation-wide phenomenon, traditionally held in the spring, to celebrate bikes and encourage more people to ride.  The month of May was Austin’s Bike Month, with cycling-related events happening all over the city all month long, including a proclamation from the City Council and a bike-in book swap at the Twin Oaks branch of the public library.  The largest event was Bike To Work Day, held on Friday, May 20.  Bike shops, cafes, libraries and other bike-friendly businesses all over the city hosted breakfast stations and after-work “happy hour” stations to provide refreshments to those who commuted to work by bike that day.

The Bike Month Closing Celebration t-shirt sales will benefit local nonprofits the Yellow Bike Project, the League of Bicycling Voters, the Austin Cycling Association, Please Be Kind to Cyclists and BikeTexas.
