Chris Draft Kicks Off Summer Reading Event in South Carolina

Literacy Leaders tackle summer reading loss by encouraging South Carolina youth to Read 30 minutes a day

June 1, 2011 - PRLog -- GREENVILLE, SC –  AJ Whittenberg Elementary School of Engineering welcomes Chris Draft to their Summer Reading Kick-off Initiative, May 27, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. The event will be webcast via live video conference with seven local schools participating. The students have been challenged to read 100,000 pages this summer and Chris Draft will reinforce this effort by charging the students and their parents to read for 30 minutes each day.

Research consistently shows that struggling readers lose ground over the summer. Of even greater concern is the fact that these losses are cumulative, creating a wider gap each year between more proficient and less proficient students. With an abundance of evidence that summer reading loss is one of the most important factors contributing to the reading achievement gap between students; Chris Draft and The Chris Draft Family Foundation's Literacy Leaders are seeking to lessen that gap by visiting schools across the nation, partnering with county libraries and educating parents and students on the importance of literacy and obtaining library cards for easy, free access to books.

Greenville County has 84 schools and is the largest school district in South Carolina.  The event at AJ Whittenberg Elementary will be available for rebroadcast via the SC Association of School Librarians website with other schools and libraries across the state.

Date: May 27, 2011
Location: 420 Westfield Street, Greenville, SC
Time: 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

The Chris Draft Family Foundation focuses on seven primary initiatives with overarching themes that stress the importance of education, healthy lifestyles, character development, personal responsibility, self-discipline and physical fitness.  The Foundation seeks partnerships with local and national community health organizations, school districts and non-profits across the country, striving to empower and uplift communities by educating and equipping families to make healthier choices.
