May 17, 2011 - PRLog -- NASHVILLE, N.C.  – Rose Hill Conference Center farm manager Larry Corbett has returned from the 2011 World English Sporting Clays Championship where he achieved the No. 1 ranking in the world in his age category.

Corbett out shot 153 other competitors from around the world in the Veterans category which includes sporting clays shooters age 55 to 64. The Championship is the most prestigious sporting clays tournament in the world, bringing together Corbett and more than 600 other elite competitors from throughout the U.S. and 12 other countries.

Corbett won the top ranking this month by going into a tie-breaking shoot off to beat Olympic Gold Medalist Dan Carlisle, according to the event organization.

“Larry is considered to be one of the best sporting clays shooters, based on his achievements at various tournaments – he’s definitely at a top level,” said Robert Crow, National Sporting Clays Association Director.

The two-day competition, which had Corbett competing at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas, alternates venues every other year between the U.S. and competition held in England.

Corbett, who was ranked the No. 5 sporting clays shooter in his age group in 2010, is also Captain of Veteran Team USA and is categorized an All-American by the organization based on his shooting record. Corbett also has won the organization’s N.C. chapter Veterans championship eight times and was on the All-State team for a record 13 straight years (1996-2009).

What distinguishes a sporting clay shooter at Corbett’s level from the typical weekend or recreational sporting clays shooter?

“It takes incredible physical practice and mental training,” says Crow. “You have to condition the muscle groups used in shooting and combine it with hand-eye coordination, but what really separates the people who shoot at this level is the mental toughness, as with many competitive sports.”

Corbett, who managed Rose Hill farm even prior to the opening of Rose Hill Conference Center in the early 1980s, also established the Rose Hill Sporting Clays Range. He continues to manage its day-to-day operations. The facility has been featured on ESPN Outdoors and has been home to the Rose Hill Sporting Clays Challenge.

“I’ve always enjoyed hunting and shooting and decided that at my age, if I was ever going to travel and compete, I figured now was the time,” said Corbett who travels to France in July for an international tournament as a member of Team USA. “I enjoy this game immensely and it has given me the opportunity to meet good people from all over the world. I feel fortunate to be able to do what I love.”

The Sporting Clays Range Corbett runs is one of the amenities at Rose Hill, a picturesque working farm that features a restored 18th century colonial Manor House that is a popular special events and weddings venue.

“We’re extremely proud of Larry’s shooting accomplishments which add to his stature in running our Rose Hill Sporting Clays range,” said Mayo Boddie Sr., chairman of Boddie-Noell Enterprises which operates the Rose Hill Conference Center, and who restored the Boddie family’s ancestral home at Rose Hill to what it is today.
