Metal forming processes are those in which force is applied on the metal to alter its geometry without cutting it. The force stresses the metal beyond its yield strength but within its tensile strength so that the material just gets plastically deformed, but does not break. In this way the sheets are bent or stretched into a variety of complex shapes. There are various types of metal forming processes like sheet metal bending, roll forming, stretch forming etc but most widely employed methods for bending metals is metal bending.

Metal Bending

Metal bending is one of the most widely employed metal working operations in which a force is applied to a piece of sheet metal causing it to bend at an angle and form the desired shape. It is a metal forming process which causes deformation in metal along a single axis which when followed by other operations can also form complex parts. Bending is usually done to increase rigidity of metal and to craft metal piece into desired shape. It is usually performed using a manually or automatically operated machine called a press brake. For this reason, the bending process is sometimes referred to as press brake forming.

Press Brake Bending

Press brake bending is a form of metal bending that is usually employed for twisting long and thin sheet metal parts using press brake machine. In press brake, sheet metal is bent to an angle using a typical V shaped punch and die. The lower part of the machine contains a V shaped groove called the die where as the upper part of the press contains a punch that will press the sheet metal down into the v shaped die, causing it to bend. In an automatic press brake, the punch is forced into the sheet with the power of a hydraulic ram. This type of bending is a suitable for processing most ductile metals, importantly for sheet metal designs with one or more bends. The common bending applications are the forming of brackets, enclosures, cams, chassis, etc.

Moreover press brake metal bending is low cost metal forming method. It is an economical way of producing 3D shapes from 2D sheets that does not need any special tooling to perform bending. Very often standard tooling is used for the punch and die for a low cost and simple low volume productions but in case of intricate designs and special bends custom tooling is required that produce complicate designs but at some extra cost.
