Chips and salsa and margaritas, oh my!

Avoid the high calorie Mexican food on Cinco De Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo - tempting, tasty treats

I LOVE Mexican food: queso, guacamole, chips with salsa - yummy! And I really love a tasty margarita on the rocks (with salt, of course!)

The problem is that nothing I just mentioned is good for me! My favorite Mexican food is high in calories, sodium and/or fat - all things that are a "no no" if I'm trying to lose weight and be healthy. Plus, I find that once I start eating chips and salsa, I just can't stop.

Why does every holiday place an emphasis on food?

Food really is an important part of many different cultures and traditions. After all, there are few things more comforting than sitting around a table sharing a wonderful meal with loved ones. But I'll bet very few of us who go out and drink margaritas with our friends on Cinco de Mayo even know what the holiday is all about. So, we can't really use "tradition" as an excuse.

The social aspect is a big part of holidays such as Cinco de Mayo - we look forward to meeting our friends for food and drinks after work. But maybe just meeting friends and hanging out is enough of a celebration. Do we really need the food?

Fiesta without the fat!

This year, skip the nachos and the Tres Leche cake. If you're looking for some spice, try Focus28's Spicy Cheese 'n Pasta, or our Zesty Vegetable Chili with Beans. And if you need a little sweet, our Caramel Pudding is creamy and sweet and will satisfy your dessert craving. You can feel full and satisfied, and participate in all the fun, without breaking your diet.
