| ![]() RockMelt – A Social Media Web Browser That Melts Your Heart?RockMelt is the first web browser that intergrates Facebook and other social medias into it. View my complete and interesting RockMelt Review here.
By: Norb Winslow It is built on Chromium, thus inherits most of the Chrome's features and designs. The most significant difference is the Facebook and App edge on both sides, which makes Rockmelt so popular and anticipated by the internet users since the first beta release. On the navigation toolbar, there is a "Share" button that allows the user to share any page via Facebook, Twitter or Gmail. Moreover, the search toolbar does not displays search results on a window. Instead, the search results are displayed in a panel, without having to leave the current page. However, you can't open few webpage in different tabs which I normally did. Although it speeds up the search process, some people would prefer the traditional way. Left Edge On the top left corner, you can click on your profile picture and update your status via Facebook/Twitter. Below your profile picture, you can choose to display your favourite friends list or online friends list . When you click on your friend's icon, the chat box will pop out at the bottom of the browser, similar to the Facebook chat box. Besides, you can view his/her recent activities by clicking on the icon. Next to it, you can send message on Facebook, star your friend to appear in the list and view his/her profile on Facebook. This is very convenient to the Facebook users, where you just have to click on the icons without leaving your current webpage. Right Edge Unlike Chrome's extensions, Rockmelt displays its extensions on the right edge. You can install Chrome's extensions in Rockmelt but some of them do not work properly in it. However, I have tried to install PageRank and FeedSquares extension on Rockmelt and they work surprisingly well. On the top right corner, you can invite friends to download RockMelt. The browser has 3 default Apps: View Later, Facebook News Feed and Facebook Profile (the 3 icons at the bottom). View Later works like a temporary bookmark, where you can keep any webpage that you want to view later by one click. Facebook News Feed displays the most recent news from your friends, whereas Facebook Profile displays your notifications. There are also few notable Apps, such as Twitter, Gmail Notifier and RSS Feed. You can add feeds from any blog and it will display the most recent posts when you click on it. However, you have to open a new tab to view a complete post. Nevertheless, it is a great way to keep informed of your favourite blog's latest news. Conclusion I would say that Rockmelt is a browser that combines Facebook, Twitter, Chrome and Feeds. It would definitely suits the die-hard social media users but not for everyone. You have to login to Facebook everytime you use the browser, which is not preferable by some non-Facebook or inactive Facebook users. Anyway, RockMelt does a really good job as a social media browser and I'm looking forward for the official release of the browser.
