Every year, nearly 7,000 women in the UK are diagnosed with the disease and only around a third survives beyond five years.

Guidelines for England and Wales are need to drawn up by National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), which have been met with approval by cancer charities.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence are wanted to see more use of a certain type of blood test, it is CA125 that detect for a protein and an indicator of the cancer. CA 125 test cost £20 and only finds cancer in around 50% of cases; this test has previously only been used in hospitals. The doctors believe that using it more often could increase the UK's poor survival rate for the disease.

Ovarian cancer symptoms could be abdominal pain, bloating (who feel full quickly when eating), increased urination and a feeling of fullness.

"The symptoms can be vague, but shouldn't be ignored if they are persistent. The vast majority of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at a late stage, so we hope to see improvements in survival as a result of these guidelines." A member of the guideline group, Sean Duffy, from the Yorkshire Cancer Network, said.

"Sometimes doctors tell women they have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - but NICE has already produced guidelines to say this is unusual as a new diagnosis in women over 50."

"We believe this tool can act as a safety net to help those women decide when another visit to the surgery is required and to communicate more effectively with their doctors." Louise Bayne, the chief executive of ovarian cancer support charity Ovacome, said.

About 90% of the survival rate increases if the disease is detected at an early stage.
