R&M Electrical Group Supply Turtle Friendly Light Fittings

April 28, 2011 - PRLog -- R&M Electrical Group Ltd and it’s consortium partners have been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to supply currently one of the largest LNG projects in the world in Australia with specialist electrical bulk materials and cables, including the supply of Turtle Friendly LED Floodlights fittings.

The project will develop gas fields, located about 130 km off the north- west coast of Western Australia and includes the construction of a 15 million tonne per annum Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant on Barrow island located 50 kilometres (31 mi) northwest off the coast of Western Australia.

The LNG trains will be located on an internationally significant Class A nature reserve and is known as “Australia’s Ark” as it plays host too many rare and endangered species, some of which exist only in this area. It is one of the most significant breading grounds for the endangered flat backed sea turtle, who return annually to the island to lay their eggs.

Disorientation from artificial light is a real hazard for turtles breeding in what will be a 24 hour operation, both in navigating to the breeding ground itself and for hatchlings making the hazardous initial journey to the safety of the sea. Hence stringent Light Pollution restrictions have been imposed on the project.

The solution http://www.rm-electrical.com were able to offer to the project was the HDL106 LED floodlight, developed in conjunction with the british based Hadar Lighting Ltd (part of the A-Belco Group), resulting in the floodlight being exclusively specified for this very prestigious project.

The HDL 106 has been developed to minimise light pollution with its innovatively designed variable beam dispersal pattern ensuring the light goes only where it is required, which in conjunction with its filter design means that the light it produces is invisible to turtles – making it the ideal solution to the Islands environmental requirements.

The advance design of the turtle friendly HDL 106 has resulted in the floodlight producing a purer light, weighing less and lasting far longer than traditional sodium or halogen equivalents. The HDL 106 has the added advantages of having no warm up period and an expected maintenance free life span of 10 years, and its power consumption is approximately 40% of its traditional contemporaries.
