April 27, 2011 - PRLog -- JELD-WEN UK is celebrating becoming the 1000th company to sign the Proskills Sustainable Workforce Skills Pledge, demonstrating the company’s long-term commitment to upskilling its workforce and highlighting the growing support for skills development within the Process and Manufacturing Sector.

The company, which employs approximately 1,200 staff and has its headquarters in Sheffield, is one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of timber doors, windows and stairs.

Proskills, the Sector Skills Council for the Process and Manufacturing Sector, developed the Sustainable Workforce Skills Pledge with employers to drive investment in skills.

The Sustainable Workforce Skills Pledge builds on the Government’s skills pledge and aims to raise awareness that a fully competent workforce is required to boost productivity, increase competitiveness and to ensure business sustainability.

Mike Ward, Managing Director of JELD-WEN, said: “We signed the Skills Pledge to show our commitment to our staff and our dedication to improving the company through investing in our employees. Companies succeed on the strength and skills of their workforce and we look forward to the benefits it will bring to our people and our business.”

Terry Watts, CEO of Proskills said, “We are delighted for JELD-WEN to have made such a public commitment to improving the skills of its workforce. Reaching the 1000th signed skills pledge represents a real achievement for the entire Process and Manufacturing Sector – it shows recognition of the importance of a skilled and motivated workforce in a sector that employs over 1 million people.”
