The Optimism of Carol Burnett

April 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Monday is Dr. Russ Busster Day, and the words and life of 77 year old Carol Burnett, American actress, comedienne, singer, dancer and writer, are presented here to help “Busst-Up” any pessimism that might mess with an otherwise optimistic look at the week ahead.

Piers Morgan, replacement for “Larry King Live,” recently interviewed Carol Burnett on his CNN nightly show.  During the show, she told a bit of her life story, laced with optimism.  While Carol Burnett has had a remarkably successful television and stage career, she has had more than her fair share of tough times and troubles in her life.

   * First, she grew up poor and in poverty.  Both her parents were alcoholics.
   * Second, she is now in her third marriage having been divorced twice before.
   * Third, the most tragic event of her life was the loss of her daughter, one of three children, to lung cancer at the age of 38.

Throughout these tragedies and difficult circumstances, she has managed to maintain a positive attitude.  Here is an imaging technique, two key phrases, and two core beliefs that have helped her stay positive throughout her life without lapsing into negativity, pessimism, and the alcoholism of her parents.

Let Carol Burnett’s Lifetime Optimism Strategies “Busst-Up” Your Pessimism

  1. When Carol was in high school, she wanted to go to UCLA to study in their famous theater program.  Her family did not have the money to send her there, not even the $50 (remember we are talking 1951) entrance fee to the University.  Carol refused her families pleadings that she go to secretarial school, and instead continued to imagine herself attending UCLA.  She focused on this image vividly, seeing herself in the program, taking classes, and interacting with teachers and students. One day, the $50 showed up in an envelope addressed to her, in her family’s apartment mailbox, no stamp, no return address. She has never learned the identity of this benefactor.
  2. After UCLA, Carol went to New York to audition for television and stage shows.  She had many auditions before she landed a part.  After each failed attempt she simply said to herself about losing out on the part and another getting the part: “It was that person’s turn to get the part, my turn will come another time.”
  3. Just before landing the part on the “Gary Moore Show” that essentially launched her career in the TV Variety Show genre, she was turned down for a part which if had she taken she would not have been available for Gary Moore.  In the moment between the moment she was turned down and the moment the Moore Show opportunity presented itself, her friend said to her: “Do not be discouraged Carol because as you always say, 'the moment one door closes, another opens.' ”
  4. About luck.  Carol Burnett expressed the view that luck only happens to those who are prepared when the moment of opportunity arises.
  5. About Spirituality and the death of her daughter:  Carol stated that her daughter’s death taught her that there is something more than just the life we see here on earth, and she feels her daughter’s presence and SPIRIT with her at all times.
