New iPhone App Connects Mutual Crushes Without Fear of Rejection

Do you wonder if this person might have a secret crush on you too but have no way of broaching this subject with them? My Secret Crush, a new app available for the iPhone (available in Apple's App store for $0.99), solves this modern-day conundrum.

The app is extremely simple, and based on recent user response to similar dating applications, it will probably be extremely popular. It allows users to scroll though their Facebook friends list and then secretly pick one person who they have a crush on. The application then cross-references your friends list to see if your crush is also using the app. If your crush has likewise chosen you, you'll both get a notification of the match.

"If the object of your desire doesn't have a crush on you, don't worry!" promises the app. “He or she will never find out”.

My Secret Crush is the latest in a slew of “secret” dating applications that operate though Facebook's open platform for third party developers. It is the only one, however, that promises true secrecy for both the user and the user's romantic interest.

Facebook Breakup Notifier, the first and most notorious of these apps, debuted this past February. It let users pick friends whose relationship status they'd like to monitor. If one of those relationships changed, the user was notified by e-mail.

Despite - or perhaps because of - the application's potential for cyberstalking, Breakup Notifier racked up 3.6 million users in just three days after its debut. And then Facebook pulled the plug.

In an email to Breakup Notifier creator Dan Loewenherz, Facebook management wrote that "to ensure positive user experiences on Platform, we run routine automated screens and remove spammy applications," reports the New York Daily News.

My Secret Crush expects no such complications, however.

“There is nothing creepy or stalkerish about this application” says My Secret Crush's co-creator Sam Adams. “It is discrete, it completely removes the fear of rejection from the equation and it only allows users to choose one crush at a time- as opposed to many. This keeps it classy. This is not yet another casual hook-up app.”

The application is expected to be hugely popular. According to Adams, an Android version is already in the works.
