Thai-Pepper: Moving to the next level

I had a nagging thought for a while - making end-grain teak wood cutting boards - can human talent beat computer controlled machines?

April 15, 2011 - PRLog -- I had a bit of a training exercise with my staff, using the same psychology as we used in the army - break them down and then build them up again. As usual I was complaining about the quality and their inefficiency. Then I showed them a You-tube clip of a CNC (Computer numeric control) router cutting a guitar body. They were stunned. The only computer they know is my laptop and the only router they know is their hand-held router.

Then I showed them a pic of a carving board (same one as in the pic) and challenged them to make it. After the second try they got what I've got in the attached photo. Same quality as CNC, but with the grain matched as only a skilled craftsman can do. Amazing - the photo does not really do justice to this masterpiece.

I honestly thought this board can only be cut by a CNC router.

My foreman is now proud to be called CNC!
