2. Ask the contractor to see a copy of their license, take down the number and use it to verify through your state that the contractor is licensed. In Michigan any person or company performing work in the amount of $600.00 or more is required to be licensed. The state will also be able to let you know how long the company has been licensed and if there has been any actions against the license. Many contractors tend to exaggerate the length of time they have been in business, so this is a great way to verify their credibility.

3. Ask the contractors what type of insurance they carry and make sure you get proof of their insurance. Always request that the contractor you choose have a certificate of insurance sent to you directly from their agent naming you, the homeowner, as a certificate holder. This will ensure that they have “general Liability” typically a $1,000,000.00 in coverage and a “workers Compensation” policy covering the workmen in case of any type of injury.

4. Always check your local Better Business Bureau for any complaints. The BBB keeps complaints on record for three years, and you may be surprised at the amount of complaints some replacement window companies  have (some more than 50). Companies with many complaints should be avoided even if the complaints have been satisfied.
