Follow on Google News | Halos of Hope Recognizes Outstanding VolunteersOrganization dedicated to providing caps for chemotherapy patients awards leading groups for number of caps donated.
By: Sky Opila Two Illinois-based organizations tied for the top honor in 2010. The charity’s Gold Halo Award was awarded to the Glenview Seniors, a group of crafters based at the Glenview Senior Center in Glenview, Ill., and to the Care Cap Crusaders, a community service group founded by Ginger Beam of Hanover Park, Ill., and based at the Friendship Village community in Schaumburg, Ill. Each of these groups donated over 1,000 caps in 2010 to help comfort cancer patients across the country. The Silver Halo Award for group crafters was awarded to Stitches of Friendship, a knitting ministry from the Friendship United Methodist Church in Lexington, N.C. The caring ministers at Stitches of Friendship donated 200 caps to help those in need. “Every day we get requests from cancer centers across the country who need hats for their patients,” said Pamela Haschke, president and founder of Halos of Hope. “We are only able to help through the talent, kindness and generosity of our volunteers who make the hats. The Halo Awards give us the opportunity to show our thanks to the groups who put forth such an extraordinary effort. We truly could not do this without them.” # # # About Halos of Hope: Halos of Hope is a not-for-profit organization committed to providing in-need cancer patients with crafted hats donated by caring volunteers. It was started in October 2007 by Pamela Haschke, a survivor of a rare breast cancer with a high mortality rate, and provides caps to over 350 cancer treatment centers across the United States.
