March 20, 2011 - PRLog -- With the introduction of the iPad 2 on March 2nd and Motorola's XOOM tablet hitting the market in late February, the tablet wars are hitting their stride. It seems we see another XOOM ad every five minutes telling us we need to just 'grab it' and with the launch of the iPad 2 on March 11th, we're about to get inundated with a wave of Apple ads telling us this is another 'Year of the iPad'. But which tablet really is better? This article should lend some clarity.

There's really two main factors that one should consider when comparing the XOOM and iPad 2. There's the hardware specifications of the physical tablet and there's the usability that the software and apps lends the buyer. How you interpret the different factors really depends on how you view your tablet purchase and what kind of tech person you are.

The iPad2 uses Apple's iOS operating system which is the same as used in the famous iPhone. The XOOM uses Android 3.0, also known as 'Honeycomb', a new tablet enhanced version of the Android software used in the Droid and so many other Android phones. Both operating systems offer a great, if not different user experience with Honeycomb perhaps a bit more complex and PC like offering more variation but the Apple iOS lauded for its simplicity and intuitiveness.

If one were to make their decision on the specs alone then clearly the Motorola XOOM comes out ahead. The Xoom features a 1280x800 resolution screen while the iPad 2 has a 1024x768 display. While the iPad 2 screen does offer wider viewing angles via its IPS technology in daily use the XOOM screen is still very nice so it shouldn't really be a deciding factor. On the other hand the higher resolution of the XOOM's screen allows for more screen real estate to work with and the widescreen 16:10 ratio of the XOOM makes for more accurate movie watching as compared to the iPad 2's squarer screen which shows black bars on the top and bottom when in widescreen mode.

Both the XOOM and iPad 2 offer dual core processors...the XOOM using the Nvidia Tegra2 and the iPad 2 using the new A5 that Apple designed. At this point the two tablets are pretty equal but it is the extras that start to show the XOOM pulling ahead. The XOOM offers stereo speakers built in, the iPad 2 mono. The XOOM has built-in HDMI for hi-def video out while the iPad2 requires an additional accessory cable for this. The XOOM also has a usb slot while the iPad2 has none. The cameras on the XOOM, both front and rear are of higher pixel count than the iPad2's.

Perhaps most importantly the XOOM offers 4G as a free upgrade while the iPad2 does not and has a non-removable 3G card. While the iPad 2 is slightly thinner and lighter than the XOOM, the difference in real world use is negligible. Will people really care whether something is 1.3 or 1.6 lbs? Will they care if it is a few millimeters thinner or thicker in daily use? Maybe for bragging rights but let's be honest. Most people will barely notice or even care in daily use.

But what about the Apps? This is where the iPad 2 has a clear and decisive advantage for now. With the iPad having been out for a year and developers having a chance to port over tens of thousands of Apps that were originally made for the iPhone, the iPad's selection of software dwarfs the XOOM's 100+ titles at start. But the XOOM does have one ace up its sleeve and that is the ability to use flash which Apple has shunned. The reality is that much of the multimedia on the web is done in Flash no matter what Steve Jobs says and by all accounts the browsing experience on the XOOM is superior to that on the iPad 2 because of the ability to see all this Flash content on the web.

So who wins? Which is better the XOOM or iPad 2? The answer depends on if your view is on the long-term or the short term and if you like expandability or simplicity. Clearly the XOOM offers more potential long term because of its generally higher specs and 4G. With the onslaught of Android tablets just beginning, this year developers will be flooding the Android Market with Apps and within the year there will be thousands available. It might take time to catch up with the iPad 2 but eventually it is almost inevitable simply because there are so many hardware manufacturers that will be selling Android tablets. The user base will demand tons of software that developers will only be too happy to produce and sell to them.
