Calling All Wizards and Muggles

Born from a tiny seed of an idea back in 1990 when Joanne Rowling was travelling to London on a train, the magical world of Harry Potter has taken the world by storm. Twenty years later, and the success of these remarkable stories is a phenomenon.

March 8, 2011 - PRLog -- The series’ continuous ability to smash – or more ‘obliterate’ book sale records has shocked and amazed publishers over the past few years. Since the 30th June 1997 when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first released, the book series now consisting of seven completed novels, has sold more than 400 million copies worldwide and has been translated into a staggering 67 languages. The most anticipated book of the series, Harry Potter (http://www.redletterdays.co.uk/Experience/Ref/BTTHP/A-Walking-Tour-Of-Londons-Harry-Potter-Locations-For-Two?method=Search) and the Deathly Hallows reportedly sold 8.3 million copies in the first 24-hours alone, as announced by U.S. Published Scholastic Corp.

It’s probably fair to say that the boy wizard is Britain’s biggest cultural export since the Beatles and James Bond and although Rowling’s teenage creation may be small for his age, only a select few would deny that he has now become a giant of contemporary consumer culture. In fact, many would now liken Potter’s famous lightning bolt scar to Nike’s iconic tick, The Apple logo, and even McDonalds’ golden arches.

One of the most special accomplishments from the series is its seamless ability to appeal to both children and adults alike. The books cleverly mix genres ranging from mystery, romance, coming of age and set them all in a relatable present-day environment.  That is, with a decidedly Dumbledore-style old fashioned edge.

Undeniably, these incredible stories seem to exemplify entertainment in virtually all possible forms. The characters themselves are engaging, the dialogue and of course the settings are compelling. The public’s reaction to the books is entertaining, as are the tribute websites, themed websites and epic queues outside the UK’s book shops. The new-release frenzy that can only come from a Potter novel, is brilliant to watch and if nothing else, perhaps the whole entertainment platter served up by the Potter extravaganza is simply there as reminder to us all – to have fun.

This experience is truly a dream for any Potter fans. Having passed through the barriers at Westminster tube station, with hopefully no trolley crashing disasters along the way, you will promptly join your guide for day. The guide will show you the location of the famous Ministry of Magic, although for muggles it is difficult to spot so keep your eyes peeled. Shortly afterwards, you will embark on a river Thames (http://www.redletterdays.co.uk/Experience/Ref/BATSO/Thame...) boat ride marking the actual route taken by the Order of the Phoenix during their escape from the Death Eaters. Your tour will end at perhaps the most memorable spot for muggles and wizards alike, at the very station where Harry first left heading for Hogwarts. Along your journey you will also learn about London’s (http://www.redletterdays.co.uk/Experience/Ref/BTTHO/A-Wal...) vast history and some of the most famous muggles who lived in this fantastic city. Please dress for all weathers as the day will go ahead despite rainy conditions and waterproof charms will be banned. No broomsticks please.
