CoolPass: Australia’s climate change advisor forecasts no slowdown in global carbon emissions.

In his third climate update, Australia’s climate change advisor, Ross Garnaut says he anticipates that global emissions will still double between 2005 and 2003 without significant climate change mitigation measures.

March 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Garnaut ‘s report says that in spite of the fact that there was a decrease in emissions in developed nations as a result of the recent global economic crisis, this will be offset by increasing emissions from developing countries. He says these developing nations will contribute 70% of the world’s business-as-usual emissions at 2030, compared to 63% as projected in 2008, CoolPass was told.

“China’s and India’s share in global emissions would be 41% and 11% respectively, both up by 3% from the review’s projections,” Professor Garnaut told reporters.

“All of the increase in global business-as-usual emissions is now projected to come from developing countries.”

However, CoolPass has learned that combined emissions from developed nations are expected to remain at roughly the same levels over the same period.

An increase in energy consumption among developing nations is also expected to increase sharply at 4.7% slightly higher than the 2008 review.

CoolPass was informed that Garnaut also projected that levels of carbon intensity would remain unchanged compared to the 2008 report with India on track to experience the fastest rate of increase in carbon intensity as a result of its reliance on coal.

The paper, the third of eight that will be released by Professor Garnaut, revising his 2008 work as a result of  new developments, was released recently in Melbourne, Australia by the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society.
